recently i turned 27. (may 21st to be exact!) my hubby of 8 years got me my very first sewing machine. it is a singer genie from 1972! and it is sooo amazing. it is the coolest thing by far and it works wonderfully. i thank the women who one day decided to donate it to my local thrift town. i remember seeing it there and thinking how awesome it was but decided against it because i did't sew, although i have been wanting to since i took a sewing class this last december.
finally 7 months later i am sitting at my sewing machine sewing my very first dress ever and can't believe how lucky i am. i love this sewing machine and i couldn't be more happy with it! but who was the women who discarded this beautiful gem? looking out my window staring out onto my tropical garden setting of my hayward casa i wonder if she is still out there.....
i picture the women being in her early fifties now. probably cleaning out her house and found her very first portable sewing machine that she received at an early age of 12. the moment she touches it she is brought back to her first memory of it..sitting on the kitchen table wrapped in the most beautiful wrapping paper with an orange bow. it was the very one she had asked for. tearing off the wrapping paper she squeals with joy in meeting her new beloved friend. she remembers the times she stayed up late with her mom as they sewed dresses and jumpsuits into the night. she had had her sewing machine for nearly 30 years and remembered the day when she had retired the singer genie for an upgraded version that had all the bells and whistles. she had saved her beloved friend in hopes that her daughter would someday share that same passion but sadly it never happened. she picked up her old friend and plugged her in for the last time. she packed up all its belongs and dropped it off at the donation center where it sat until my hubby gleaming with joy placed it on the passenger seat of our 1964 vw bug and awaited in anticipation for me to arrive home from work.....images of my first sewn dress to come! stayed tuned
