bike chick tip!

hello lovies! today is another bike chick tip!!!

bike chick tip #11- LIGHTS!!!

now that it is getting darker much more earlier it is soo important to be visible while riding. here in cali it is the law that you have a front light and a tail light. i have know several people who have gotten tickets for not having lights on and i must say they really do help!

frog lights by knog
gekko lights by knog

there are TONS of lights out there on the market and they all pretty much do the same thing but here is what we use and really like! the first is frog (one light) or gekko ( 3 lights!!) by knog these run about $15 which i think is a great price! both of these come as either front lights and tail light. these are my favorite because they come in really cute colors and they are SUPER easy to take on and off your bike. They typically have 2 settings, a constant beam of light or a blinking light. when riding i tend to always put both my front & tail lights as blinking because it is easier for a driver to notice more but when i go down our drive way i switch the front light to a constant beam so i can avoid pot holes.

i currently have two tail lights on my bike because now that it is winter my coats tend to be longer and can cover my tail light that is attached to my seat post so i use a clip on that i put on my basket. it is always better to be overly prepared rather then just to wing it. i want to replace my tail light with a gekko because when the batteries die in the one i have currently it is a pain to take off!

the mister has really really great front light. it is by planet bike was about $30 but so worth it. i used it one day and it really likes up the road so you can stay clear of glass or pot holes. I want to invest in one of these babies when i get a chance because the light is so much brighter then the frogs and the beam of light is also longer so that you can see several feet in front of you. only thing is this can be a bit trickier to put on your bike but there are so many creative ways to make it work.

another thing that is always good to have is a reflector and pro campo has the CUTEST bird reflectors! i want them so bad and this is for sure is one of the venders i MUST have in the shop.

happy and safe riding!!!

  2. love this post, and such cute relectors :)
Here driving home it's pitch black now & I see soooo many cyclists still without lights or relectors (often kids too) - it scares me for them. xoxo

  3. i wish this were a law out here (or an enforced law)! i get so nervous for the peeps in my neighborhood. it's DARK on some our windy, woodsy streets, and well, wearing all black to bike or hike is just UNadvisable!

we have lights on our bikes (it was law in Germany too), but i believe they are the kind that are powered by movement. (help me out here, i know there's a word for this...it escapes me...)

    great tips!

ps - thank you for your kind words on my post the other day. it means a lot. :)

  4. I love those bird reflectors! Thanks for these fabulous recommendations - I'm already thinking of them for Christmas gifts, especially for the person in my life who takes crazy 3am rides through dark New England streets. (But not with lights as good as these!)

  5. how wonderful! I wish I had a nice bike to ride around! Glad you think about stuff like lights on your bikes! I've heard of terrible accidents because people weren't seen in the dark.

  6. I have a light that is attached to a sweatband around my head. I look like a coal minor.

  7. aw, I want to stick those bird reflectors on ME!
I think it's so important to stress lights, I see so many cyclists at night that are inches away from death b/c they seem almost invisible. I've heard of lights similar to but better than christmas tree lights that you can wrap around the bike to illuminate it extra. seems fun

  9. I love the bird reflectors! I usually wear my headlamp, mainly because I love headlamps, but I really do need a light for the back of my bike too! Good to know I can find good ones for cheap! :)

  10. i love knog lights, they look good but their batteries aren't great and after a while the lights start to not work. but as for the bird reflector, i love it! i actually got one at the expo and wear it on my blazer lapel. it's cute! and yes, we should all be wearing our lights for higher visibility.

  11. I adore those bird reflectors, which reminds me that I actually need to buy one. Would not want to get run over!!
    Have a great Thursday :)

  12. I like fixed lights on my bike, otherwise if I forget to remove them they get stolen! Bastards!

Those bird reflectors are so cute!

(And Kelli, I think it's called a dynamo, the light that's powered by the wheel. I have one on my bike and that's what I call it anyways!)

  13. ooh, I have the frog on my front. I love it! It's a great price, and I've never had to replace the batteries. I only wish it was a bit brighter - but maybe I could get two.
