i heart the outdoors

heya. hope everyone had a great weekend.  i had myself a wonderful 3 day weekend; it was very hard to go back to work on sunday that's for sure!

as for our weekend we an amazing breakfast at a new place (more on that later) and did a bit of thrifting. after, tom and i headed to a trail nearby. it has rained a ton the day before so the trail was a bit muddy but it was such a beautiful day that we wanted to get out and get a little exercise.
since it was so moist out there was tons of mushrooms which i was very excited about. i love mushrooms and have been wanting to get one tattooed for the longest time but not sure where yet. i'm sure in a matter of time i will figure out the perfect spot for it :)
there was a unexpected waterfall that felt a bit out of place but i thought it was really pretty despite the dirty brown water. the sound of water, to me, is extremely soothing however we had to cut short our walk because the trail crossed the stream making it impossible to cross without rain boots so we had to turn around. neither tom or i were willing to walk across the moss covered tree either, cause you just know how that would have turned out :O yea, me, wet as a rat, covered in dirty brown water...no thanks!
what tom and i wore hiking :) he scored his awesome red pendleton while thrifting the day before. he looks like my very own handsome ranger rick! i love it. we still have not finished that roll of film we took with us; we have had it since christmas and i can't wait to see what surprises it brings! will share these too once developed.
yes, yes those are reindeer & bison in the same captivity. we have an awesome local zoo.
>>> a lot of time was spent outdoors this weekend. i went to the zoo with my mom on saturday. it was earth day there so there were tons of organizations out on display. for a while now i have had this lingering feeling of wanting to do more. and by doing more i mean by getting out there and helping improve our planet and making sure others in the future can enjoy the same things i do. i do feel like i do a lot, we ride out bikes, drive an old car that takes very little gas, recycle, thrift and eat organic. but i know we could be doing so much more.

there are so many things that i love about this place and i am the kind of lady that loves being outside and i feel at times that we take advantage of the things we love. i want to give back and i think now is the time. i am not sure yet what i would like to do, teaching & educating people is something that has been on my mind. i think the more aware & educated people are can help improve our earth.  i have looked up a couple organizations that are dear to my heart like the surfrider foundation and the east bay bike coalition and at the moment i amconsidering my options on how to give back. if you have any suggestions i would love to hear them!

  1. I loved the photos of the mushrooms! I know what you feel about saying you want to give back to the planet. I've been feeling a similar way - but its the community at large I feel like I should help, been thinking I should use my legal skills to do some kind of advocacy skills, or maybe teach new migrants English. I really don't know where to start though. You guys look great in your hiking gear!

  2. What a beautiful walk!

Sounds like a good plan - even if you only help out at one event, for one day, it all helps! I'm sure if you approach your favourite organisations they will have lots of ideas of how you can help. Maybe in some web/social media capacity, since you are a blogger extraordinaire?!

  5. You could always do little blurbs here. Like if you have information regarding great volunteer websites or a list of seasonal veggies and fruits, why riding a bike is better for the environment, or why shopping for local food is better... stuff like that? It may be stuff you already know and practice, but I'm sure I and others would learn a lot from what you already know about being green.

  8. you both look like the most dapper hikers I've ever seen.

I do like spending time outdoors as well but in less wildernessy environments.I'm scared of any area that might harbor snakes. I really am a wuss. Have you ever seen that documentary The Cove about dolphin killings? I watched it awhile ago and wanted to get involved in helping animals but it kind of fell through (the winters tend to kill all my plans). I hope you are able to find a niche/organization. They would be lucky to have you.

    1. your not a wuss, i don't like snakes either, they creep me out! i don't think i want to watch the dolphins die, they are too precious i am sure i can already guess what they are doing to them, those bastards!

    1. haha i know it was a very good call, it would have been a sad bad mess! hehe. it was my first time at that zoo and i loved all the enclosures, they were much more real then the sf zoo not better then being actually out in the wild but a step better, i think.

  11. Ranger Rick!!! Ahaha!

I love the mushrooms and the waterfall! So beautiful!

I hear you on the giving back and doing more to be better to mother nature. I, personally, am into the idea of composting. I don't know anything about it, or where to even start, but as soon as I get settled in my own place in a few weeks, I am going to seriously work on getting a compost bin going.

You know what I think would be cool?... If you set up a bicycle mechanic class. I don't know how to fix my own bike when it has a hiccup, but I bet you do... Call the class Wenches with Wrenches... make the instructors all women and dress like Rosie the Riveter. You could even bike to different locations on different days to teach workshops.

I think you could also volunteer. Schools, museums, zoos.. they always need volunteers to help with tours, classes... OMG... maybe you could teach an environmentally conscious art class... take people to paint and draw outside!! I think that would be awesome... and then you can turn your tattoos into coloring books, because I am still on that idea, and refuse to let it go. A coloring book made of recycled paper and you can sell the,... it can fund your art supplies for the environmentally conscious art classes... Am I going too far?

    I got a little excited... :D

  12. You both look awesome. Tom looks great in red. It's so great that you want to help. I often look around my apartment as ways we can reduce waste. I'm glad you want to go out and educate people it's so important. I've been thinking about how the weather patterns are changing and it's quite worrisome.

  15. wow, what an awesome weekend! Tres cool fungi, love the 'chocolate milk' waterfall; and oh my goodness bison, I just LOVE bison - we used to see some on a farm on our way to Wales, such amazing, majestic creatures. Love the outfit too (& Tom's of course), you look gorgeous, what fab boots, & I always love something cute in mustard.
And I'm with you there, trying to do what we can but sure there's more; I've always been an nature girl & would love to be able to work outside (one of my faves is the Woodland Trust over here), helping a green cause is always a great idea, both of those causes look very worthy, look forward to hearing more xox

  16. It looks like you had such a great day/weekend! I'm a self-professed indoor girl (haha), but I do love a good walk now and again! Mushrooms drive me crazy and I always squish them if I find them in my lawn (the same goes for pine cones!). Your outfit is super cute (love your jacket) - I haven't been to the zoo in ages, but I think that would be a fun outing!
