in some of the windows you can see skulls |
the art exhibit is being held from oct. 8th to nov.14th...i am not sure how long this has been going on as this will be our second halloween here and we missed the exhibit last year and we were super bummed. i was so excited to go because the meek mansion is never open to the public. the mister didn't go as he went on a bike journey so i can't wait to go again and go at night to get the whole effect!
people from all over hayward participated in the exhibit from grade schoolers, high schoolers and
independent artist...i was so impressed, i thought they did a great job and i especially love the "stained glass" art the best! made me want to go home and whip something up...perhaps next weekend!
i really loved this alter which is in stead of alters of remeberence different people made books instead...so clever! |
since dia de los muertos is a day of remembrance there were little and large alters scattered about remembering family members as well as the former owners of the house the meek's.
there were several paintings done by various local chicano artists that were amazing! i felt so inspired by this that i now know what type of tattoo i want to get next! day of dead birds! can't wait to start designing!
later that night we went over my cousin's house and we carved pumpkins till the early morning! i did an owl and the mister did a GREAT day of the dead skull! here they are at home in front of our little casa :D it was a PERFECT fall day!
hmm not a great picture but you get the point, no? |
what is the best memory you have a perfect fall day?
xo,

ReplyDeletewow, what a great weekend. I LOVE that house, it's so beautiful & very gothic.
ReplyDeleteFavourites are def the windows (love the take on church windows) & love the painting of the couple, and the altars are lovely. (one of my favourite pc games is Grim Fandango which looks lovely, I'd would love to be in Mexico for DOD)
What fab carvings, you're both so artistic and great idea about a DOD tattoo! Pleased you had so much fun this weekend. x
I was going to comment on the art exhibition but OMG those pumpkins! You are so clever. Makes me want to rush out and buy some now!
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful weekend! I used to love going to the Day of the Dead parade when I lived in Tucson, AZ. Nothing really like that here in the Midwest. And your pumpkins are too cute!

ReplyDeletemy favorite fall days are those when I get to walk around downtown and it's chilly and you get to bundle up with scarves and nice cozy jackets and a good warm drink in hand ^^

ReplyDeleteAhhhh so awesome! I love Dia De Los Muertos! My mom had her 6th grade class make an alter for it; it was a little early but she had them paint gourds too, which were getting mushy! She's also getting a d.d.l.muertos skeleton and dog skeleton tattoo! ;) Annnnd.... I think you'll be psyched about my giveaway since your a Dia fan too (hint hint ;) )! Love the stained glass pieces too!
ReplyDeleteSo happy to have come across your blog from Little Monarch! Your pumpkins are fantastic!!!! I'll be following along with you!
ReplyDeleteHappy Monday :D
It must have been an amazing day of inspiration for a textile graphic designer like yourself!
ReplyDeleteThose pumpkins are great! Much better than I can ever do. Mine always just end up being the traditional large mouth with one tooth and big eyes...I get impatient with it. haha! Glad you had such a nice day!
ReplyDeleteWow, what an interesting exhibit! I loved going to pick out pumpkins and picking out a costume.
ReplyDeleteLove this collection! My dad collected "posadas", and these dia de los muertos images are a big part of my early memory.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! The title of this post alone was a delight, and all the pictures and narrative were so great. I loooove your owl pumpkin, of course!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the owl pumpkin carving! Very skilled carving.
ReplyDeleteYay for Martha pumpkins! I really want to try the ones where she uses gords for the eyes.
ReplyDeleteprettiest pumpkins i have EVER seen! How long did it take to carve them? You are skilled! :)
