adventures in our little town

hiya folks! hope you all had an amazing weekend! i really enjoyed the time tom and i shared this weekend, we got a great workout and did a little exploring around town. this is rare since we don't particularly care for the town we live in. on wednesday, tom ventured around town because he is doing some murals at work and they need to be specific to the area that we live in. he found some really great places and the sulfur creek nature center was one of them! when he mentioned it that day, all he said was...bird sanctuary and i was sold!

i googled up the place to read a bit more about it and found out they needed volunteers so i got super excited about it. i used to work at an animal sanctuary called, safari west, when in high school and for a whole summer i was their sole animal dietitian!!  my favorite job hands down and being able to do that again would be amazing and fulfilling to me in so many ways. i love animals so much and what is better then helping beautiful creatures? not much i can tell you.
these are the illustrations they have in front of each capivity, so cute right?
i have a hard time with zoos. i love them but then i hate them. i think learning about our local animals is important but seeing them all cooped up makes me said, i want to free them. the nature center at the moment needs help with docent's so i would potentially go to schools and educate people about the local birds in the area and then in 2013 i can apply to help in the hospital that is there, feeding animals and whatever else.

i found the next bird i want to get tattooed! he is an american kestrel and is the smallest falcon! he was adorable! they also had a barn owl and screech owls that looked like babies but they were full grown, AMAZING!!

the magpie was also a favorite, we were, at one point talking to each other. i would say hi and he would sqwuak back to me...it went on for about 10 minutes. it was super silly. as you can see i dressed for the part...me and the coyote t-shirt. i felt so bad for him, he looked so sad and depressed. i wanted to free him and cuddle him forever!

it was a beautiful day out and we got a great workout so i thought a little ice cream would be just the ticket and you know what...it was! pecan praline, i love you so much! we then hit the thrift stores where i scored not one BUT two high waisted jeans and a couple of really cute dresses. will show more of those finds on wednesday! eek!!!

  1. You are so adorable and I love your shoes. I feel the same way about zoos, I love seeing and learning about the cool animals but seeing them in cages makes me sad, except for fish for some reason. I guess I don't think of fish as having feelings like I do other animals, which is ridiculous. Free the fish!

  2. hahah I love the last two pictures! You are adorable! Your outfit is super cute too. I feel the same way about zoos. It's so nice to go and see an actual animal compared to just pictures in a book but it's sad. When I was little I told everyone I wanted to be a zoologist because then I could cuddle all of the animals so they wouldn't be so sad. LOL

  3. I have the same feeling about zoos, it's fun in the beginning to look at the animals but then it makes me so sad to see them all caged up, that poor coyote looks so sad! :(
But I'm glad you had a good day, and it would be really cool if you could teach kids about the birds, then maybe you could go birdwatching in the wild as well! :) I guess you have to be very patient to do that though!

    1. i know, he looked up at us and then put his head back down again...so sad! i want to in there and play with him so that he gets some excitement but i am sure they frown upon that. plus he might bite me...still to see him happy would be worth it!

  4. I feel the same about Zoos too. I mean it's great to be able to see animals that I would never get a chance to see unless I went travelling a lot.. but they're cages/exhibits are usually so small. And they look so bored most of the time. I remember the one day I was visiting the Zoo and this woman was complaining about how small the tiger exhibit was, Then a few hours later I think I was at the fox exhibit (or some other smaller animal one) and someone was complaining how the exhibit must be too big cause they couldn't find the animal and they paid money to see animals. You can never make everyone happy. If the exhibits were bigger and gave more room for the animals to run around we probably would rarely see them. Then the Zoo would lose money...

Anyways, your face in those last two pictures kills me. Haha.

    1. the oakland zoo by our house is actually pretty nice and some of the exhibits are really big. they had a sun bear and they are the tiniest bear and we couldn't see him, his cage was huge! and covered with trees and bushes. if i were him i would have hid too! yea there is no making people happy sometimes, people just suck :(

  8. I hope everything works out with the volunteer work. It sounds like its right up your alley. I feel the same way about zoos. I mean they are fun to visit but the animals always look depressed and I know (I can read their minds) that they would rather be out in the wild. That little coyote looks so sad. If he promised not to eat my face,I would totally hug him for days.

  10. Oh what a beautiful day! I feel super sad for animals in captivity too - I didn't go to zoos for many years while they were still very exploitative but these days they are much more about breeding programs for endangered species, and they have the best interests of the animals in mind and devise clever enrichment programs to keep them happy and interested. It is still sad though - especially with the larger animals. Anyway - good for you for getting involved and for looking SUPER cute while you do! I dig your fab tshirt and I would LOVE an ice cream too! Sarah xxx

  15. so your weekend sounds & looks fantastic; I'm with you about zoos, it's just wrong, but people just mess up those poor animals habitats don't they... I think it's a fantastic idea to voluteer there, especially knowing how much you love animals & birds, & of course you'd said recently you were looking for something like this, that's serendipity for you! We see a lot of (english) kestrels here, they're the most popular of our birds of prey & we see them whilst driving along, hovering over a field, a great sight. The magpies we have however are not as nice as yours there - ours scare off all the song birds & are very vicious (& noisy) :)
And finishing off with scumptious ice cream, yum! xox
