hello and happy friday! boy oh boy this week has been crazy! work has be pretty much insane, i had to tell my boss NO i can't work for you today because that would be a 14 day in a row work week. im exhausted and all i want to do is be a slug in the sun. regardless, today i am working but

i wanted to share a little adventure i went on in my kitchen with some dye and a dress. my best friend is getting married in less then a month. i am a bridesmaid and her colors are purple and gray. now i hate bridesmaids dresses, they are horrible and i wanted something i would wear again but i was having the worst time finding a dress i liked that was the right purple. so, instead i looked for a white dress i liked. remember this
dress? i wore it to see marina and it was perfect.
i stopped at my local michaels and picked up some dye, two purple and one denim jean color. it needed to be an eggplant and i wasn't sure the purple in the box would be the right color. now rit dye typically is for natural fabrics although nylon is okay too. it doesn't work so great on 100% polyester which the underside of the dress is. i wasn't too worried but in order to get a darker color the 2 purple packs and then half of the denim. i then added 1/2 a cup of salt and 1 table spoon of detergent as per the directions.
i stood in front of the stove for about 30 minutes while continuously stirring, the timer went off and i got to work washing the dye out. you have to make sure whenever you are dying that you aren't using things that you cook with. i went and bought this big pot at the thrift store and it was perfect for this!
the color came out awesome and the underside of the dress came out just as i thought. i really love the contrast and that you can see the lighter purple coming through the lace. i am not a huge purple person so after the wedding i am going to dye it black and perhaps a pair of pants that are sadly fading.
dying is a great way to rejuvenate old clothes especially if you aren't crazy about the color. rit also makes products that extract color making it easier to dye something lighter. if you dye anything i would love to see!
