bike chick tip!

hello and happy wednesday! today is......you guessed it bike chick tip day!!!

bike chick tip# 8- skirt/chain guards!!!

okay all you long skirt, baggy pant riding chicks....this one is for you! so i am not really a long dress or long skirt wearer...i have a couple that i do wear on occasions but i much prefer short dresses and skirts but for those of you who do wear longer items or even bootcut or wide leg pants it is important to know about the skirt or chain guard.

i love this dutch bike and the art on it, makes me want to buy an old frame and come up with a little design myself!

what is a chain or skirt guard you may ask...well it is a metal cover that goes over your chain or wheel that protects your clothes from getting caught in either the back wheel or your chain or gears. the chain  guard will always be on the right side where the chain and front gear is....most older lady frames and some 3 speeds come with a chain guard. this is more widely seen where as the wheel skirt guard is a bit more rare in america and you will most definitely have to buy a bike that already has a skirt guard. they don't make them separately to buy as the bike frame needs to be made so specifically for one...but there are tons of new bikes out there that have this really awesome feature.

ursula came with a chain guard that matches the rest of her frame but if your bike doesn't come with a chain guard you can always buy them and add them to your bike. when riding urusla i never have to worry about rolling my pant legs up..i ride care free but with mary i always have to roll up my right pant leg whenever i wear wider pants....

these are from the velo orange website but they don't sell vintage chain guards..that you need to troll craigslist for

here are a view of skirt guards that you can add on to any bike so that you can be ready to cycle chic in those long following dresses and skirts...sorry didn't have any of my own photos to share but these are quite amazing...all found from one of my favorite bike blogs...riding pretty

ride on you lovely ladies....don't let this be you! hehehehehehe...love this picture of me...soo freakin awkward! hehehe...

tomorrow...picture of the mayan ruins in tulum!!!!!!!!!

  2. cool! It's funny, but I think my bike had a skirt guard over the back wheel, but it was rubbishy plastic! If I ever get my bike back (and I'm still working on it) I think I'd try to get a new one - esp LOVE the painted one & the vintage chain guard pics, perhaps something like that? Can't wait to see pics of the ruins (I LOVE LOVE LOVE historic ruins!) x

  5. Aww my old cruiser that'd I'd had for years and years had a chain guard, but it got stolen last year! :( They are pretty darn nice, but it does make putting your chain back on kind of a pain! ;)

  6. great post here. so grateful for skirt gaurds since i never wear pants. i once wore a shorter flowey skirt on my road bike and it got caught in the back breaks, i learned from there not to wear that skirt on the road bike but you can also hold your skirt in your lap a la marilyn monroe style with one hand if it happens to fly up or swoosh around a lot. gosh, there are so many tricks to riding in style but it can be done!
