so when my mom brought me these veggies, i was a little scared i would kill them but luckily one of our neighbors was getting rid of a wooden trough which i had planned to put more succulents in but then this worked out better! my mom was so nice to plant them for me as i had some business to attend to....then we went away on our honeymoon and i wondered how they were doing and when we came back it was like a tiny little edible jungle had sprouted! i was so excited!!!!!!
cabbage |
spinach |
lettuce & chard |
so yesterday i made a mixed green salad with lettuce, spinach & cabbage. I made sure to leave about 2 inches on the lettuce after i cut off what i wanted and only took the bottom leaves of the spinach and cabbage so that more could grow. i am thinking that my chard might need more time to grow so i left him...
it was so awesome to step out our front door and pick lettuce for dinner, the most fresh salad i have ever had! we get a organic box of produce each week which i know is extremely fresh too but this totally trumped the lettuce and spinach we get in that box. i am used to getting our spinach covered in mud but these greens were so clean and almost bug free :)
the salad turned out so yummy...grilled chicken, garbanzo beans, tomatoes & cucumbers topped with monterey jack cheese and oil/vinegar/dijon mustard....oh so yummy!
i am so happy with the results i am going to OSH this weekend to buy another trough and some more greens!!
what grows in your garden??? i would LOVE to hear tips or any advice you guys might have!!!
tomorrow's FRIDAY and me and the mister are going to go to the dia de los muertos exhibit at night!
xo,
cb
That looks so delicious. I love vegetables, seeing that I am a vegetarian. I'm so impressed by your garden! Amazing! I want to eat salad with you!
ReplyDelete@kate: yay come have salad with me minus the chicken of course! we will just add broccoli or something else yummy!
ReplyDeleteThe big big ennemy of greens are slugs, you may not have them whre you live, but over her in Ireland its mad. So no choice but pellets. This year I grew beans, red and green, peas, carrots, tomatoes, strawberries, basil, mint, thyme, lots of parsley, and dill, but my pride and joy were my potatoes. They are so rewarding to grow, and you can also grow them in a bag. Next year I'll be interested in mixing flowers with veggies as some combinations are real good for improving soil quality and fertilizing it. At the moment, I am just cleaning up the garden and will start preparing the ground for next year's crop soon.
ReplyDeletethat's so awesome you were able to yield such delicious things from your garden. I did not have as much luck... I missed a couple days of watering and the heat dried it right up. But this year I planted jalapenos, tomatoes, and a bunch of herbs. We did have a bounty of cherry tomatoes, which was cool b/c we only had one plant of that - vs two of each other type.
ReplyDeleteI'm so jealous! I've wanted a little garden for so long, but our patio doesn't get much direct sunlight. Look at all of those yummy greens!!
ReplyDeleteYUMM! Your attempts at a garden turned out much better than mine this summer, haha.
ReplyDelete@ daniele: WOW potatoes, that is awesome! i was actually just thinking that when i did this post how fun potatoes would be to grow. i know the mister a while back wanted to do sweet potatoes :D maybe we will give them a try!
ReplyDeleteI have been cursed with a black thumb so weeds grow in my garden :)
ReplyDeletelooks like a nice garden! in my garden there were huge zucchini , cucumbers, spaghetti squash, tomatoes, and beans. the beans didn't really work at all but the rest was lovely.
ReplyDeleteMmm... my mouth is watering! I love gardening, especially when the results are edible! ;) After accidentally planting gourds last spring that over took our garden, we now planted winter squash that will actually be edible! That salad looks super bomb-diggity! ;)
ReplyDeletei enjoy living vicariously through tales of others' magical gardens....as i have a tendency to murder plants. i don't mean to. but it happens. a lot. sigh. :P
ReplyDeletebut i did buy a beautiful fresh butternut squash from the farm stand last night. i have biiig plans for that sucker. yum! :)
I admire anyone who can garden (I have a silicon thumb :)) - I'm happy to support and enjoy my local CSA. This looks so good!
ReplyDeleteGood job CB! When can I come over for lunch? I miss having a garden.
ReplyDeleteyeah! this is a very delicious looking garden.
ReplyDeletelooks yummy. Our garden's not very big, so we don't have room for a proper veg patch, but we do grow tomatoes, garlic & red bell peppers, all in pots and we've also used old rubbish bins to grow potatoes and also runner beans - they all grow really well even in the rubbish English weather! It's amazing what you can grow just in smallish pots. Go for it! x
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome. I have an indoor herb garden of basil, rosemary, and parsley and we want to start an organic raised garden soon.
ReplyDeleteThis is so awesome! I just started with my own little rosemary plant but I have to keep it planted because I don't have a backyard... one day I hope I have greens as beautiful as yours :)
ReplyDeleteLooks delicious!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by the other day, you have a lovely blog!
xo, Nadia
It's always nice to have a little garden at home.
ReplyDeletethey look delicious!
you have a nice blog here, keep on posting!
try to visit my blog too..
thank you:)
Your veggies look SO "lush"!!!! I've got some red cabbage (and the leaves look 10 times sadder than yours), basil, cilantro, tomatoes and some tiny atomic peppers. It's my first time growing the cabbage, they're almost ready to pick. What are you using to control pests? We're trying to go all organic (no harmful sprays). Chives are also super rewarding, requiring such little work and taste so good!
ReplyDeleteHope you had a great time at the Dia De Los Muertos celebration!
That looks so yummy! We grow tomatoes, lima beans, and snow peas here!
ReplyDeleteWow, that salad looks delicious! Go you with your veggie garden. I can't wait to have my own some day.
ReplyDeleteYummy! You make me wish I had a garden!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderfully nice of her! I notice my bin greens are very dirty too. It threw me off at first!
ReplyDeleteGarden greens and veggies are the best! Enjoy your garden!
ReplyDeleteYAY! Great to see your mini-garden! xo
ReplyDeleteWow, your gardening skills are impressive! I, unfortunately, have managed to kill all my succulents except one very tenacious little guy. Sigh!
